Introduction of Kim Bap
In the time of spring, it is a little bit warm and humid in Hong Kong right now. Under this weather, it is normal to loss appetite for food. Hence, we need a bit of freshness to make ourselves refresh. This Korean seaweed rice roll (Kim bap) might be one of our remedy.
Background of Kim Bap
As one of the most common national food in Korean, it is not hard to find kim bap in Korea – from convenient store to street hawker, even in high-class restaurant. Korean serve it as daily food in breakfast or lunch as it is simple to make and easy to bring.
What’s the different between Sushi Roll and Kim Bap?
Same as sushi roll in Japan, seaweed is used to wrap the cooked rice with other ingredients to form kim bap. But the different are – firstly, instead of using vinegar to season the rice, sesame oil will be used in kim bap. Secondly, to make sushi roll, we will use sashimi (Raw fish) as main ingredients while Korean use luncheon meat and others fresh/pickled vegetable instead. All these elements make kim bap an easy and economical daily food to make.
Korean Seaweed Rice Roll (Kim Bap 김밥)
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 pack Seaweed
- 2 pieces Eggs
- 1 piece Carrot
- 1 piece Cucumber
- 1 can Luncheon Meat
- 1½ cup Japonica Rice
- 1 tsp Oil
Seasonings
- 1 tsp Salt (For Egg)
- 1 tsp Salt (For Rice)
- ½ tbsp Korean Sesame Oil
Instructions
- Prepare all ingredients. Beat the eggs.
- Cook 1 cup of japonica rice using rice cooker.
- Heat a pan with 1 tsp oil. Fry the beaten eggs on the pan until it completely cooked. Tip: As we will shred and roll the egg into the kim bap later on, the easiest way to make this is to pour the beaten eggs in the pan and let it completely set like a “pancake” shape.
- Shred the carrot, cucumber and fried egg. Cut the luncheon meat into strips.
- Once the rice is cooked, pour the salt and Korean sesame oil into the rice and mix it well.
- Lay a piece of seaweed on top of a piece of cling wrap (Or using bamboo mat). Spread the rice on the seaweed under 2/3 area is covered. Lay all prepared ingredients on top of the rice.
- Wrap the kim bap and spread some sesame oil on it to make a shiny surface.
- You can slice and enjoy this simple, healthy, delicious kim bap!
