Thai prawn fry noodles (A.k.a. Pad Thai) is one of the most famous Thai dish. When you travel in Thailand, you can get Pad Thai almost everywhere – No matter in a restaurant or at a street food hawker. Then why this dish became so signature in Thai cuisine?
History of Pad Thai
This extremely popular Thai dish was first appeared after WWII. Back in that time, people in Thailand were struggling in their living and rice is an expensive staple food to serve in their daily meal. At the same time, rice noodles became popular among Chinese. Therefore, Thai started to develop their own rice noodles as their economical staple food.
Taste the Flavours of Pad Thai
Instead of using pork and beef, which were commonly used as main ingredients in Chinese fry rice noodles, Thai used prawns to distinguish their own fry rice noodles style. With adding local seasonings such as tamarind juice, fish sauce and palm sugar, an appetizing Thai flavour was packed into the Pad Thai.
Prawns Fry Noodles (Thai Pad Thai Noodles ผัดไทย)
Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1-2 piece(s) Dried Tofu (Sliced)
- 1 piece Egg
- 50 g Prawns
- 200 g Thai Noodles
- 50 g Chinese Chives
- 2 tbsp Grained Peanuts (Optional)
- 1 tbsp Lime Juice (Optional)
- 2 tbsp Oil
Seasonings
- 2 tbsp Thai Fish Sauce
- 1 tsp Palm Sugar
- 2 tbsp Tamarindpaste/ juice
- ½ tsp Salt
Instructions
- Prepare all ingredients.
- Soak the Thai rice noodles in water for at least an hour to moist them. Slice the dried tofu and cut the Chinesechives into 3 cm.
- Heat a pan with 2 tbsp oil and fry the dried tofu and egg.
- Add prawns and stir fry them until completely cooked.
- Add the soaked rice noodles and all seasonings into the pan/wok. Stir fry them well until the noodle become soften.
- Add mung bean sprouts and Chinese chives and stir fry it well.
- Finally, add grained peanuts and lime juice (optional) to enhance the flavour. You can enjoy this delicious local Thai street food now!
